About
The story behind Mary Kenya Blog. A Kenyan traveller, an African adventure, and a passion for sharing it all with the world.
Hello
A Kenyan girl with a restless heart and a passion for showing the world what Africa is really made of.
Hi, I’m Mary – and if you’ve landed on this page, there’s a good chance there’s a lot you love about travel because I do, too. Welcome. I’m really glad you’re here.
Kenyan at heart. Traveller by nature. Storyteller by choice.
I was born and brought up in Kenya, a country which I am convinced is one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Growing up here, I had the sort of childhood where adventure was never very far away – where weekends might include driving through the Great Rift Valley, where the sound of wildlife at dawn was completely normal, and where the horizon always seemed to be calling. I didn’t really appreciate any of it then, the way you never do when something beautiful is simply home.
It was not until I began to travel outside Kenya – to other parts of Africa and eventually other corners of the world – that I was able to see my country and my continent in new eyes. Suddenly what I had grown up taking for granted were the things that left other travellers completely speechless. The landscapes. The wildlife. The warmth of the people. The food. The culture. The sheer staggering diversity of it all.
That change in thinking is what began Mary Kenya Blog.
I made this space because I wanted to share Africa in a way that’s honest – not by the perspective of a travel brochure or a perfectly curated highlight reel – but through the eyes of someone who’s actually living here, who has made the mistakes, taken the wrong roads, found the hidden places, and come back with stories worth telling. I write about what I know, what I’ve experienced at first hand, and what I truly believe will help you travel better – whether you’re visiting Kenya for the first time or going for the tenth.
The blog covers all that I’m passionate about – Kenya safaris, wildlife, destinations throughout Africa and a certain lifestyle that comes with a life lived outdoors and in motion. You’ll find here practical guides, honest recommendations, seasonal advice, the odd personal story that didn’t quite go to plan. The ones that are usually the best are those.
I need to be upfront on something. I do not work with press trips or even paid placements that compromise what I write. Everything you read on this blog is based upon actual experience, real opinion, and a deep respect for the places and communities I write about. I think that responsible, honest travel writing matters – and that readers deserve content that they can actually trust.
Over the years, I’ve come to know an African safari, from the Great Migration in the Masai Mara to hiking through the forests of Mount Kenya; from spending quiet mornings on the Kenyan coast watching the Indian Ocean wake up to sitting around enough campfires to know that the best conversations in the world happen under African skies. Each of those experiences has shaped the way I write and the things that I want to share.
But Kenya is only the beginning. East Africa is a place of breathtaking depth – Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia – and I’m always exploring more of it, always learning, always finding new reasons to be grateful that this part of the world is where I get to call home.
If you’re planning a trip to Kenya or anywhere in Africa I hope what you find here makes the trip a little less daunting and a lot more exciting. If you’re a fellow traveller and just love to read about adventure then I hope these stories provide you with the same joy as they do for me to write. And if you’re a Kenyan reading this, I hope it is a reminder – like it often is to me – of just how amazing the place we’re from is.
Travel has taught me that the world is much more generous, much more beautiful, and much more connected than we sometimes remember. Kenya taught me that first. And I’ve been trying to share that lesson all this time.
Thank you for being here. Explore the blog, ask me anything and most importantly – go somewhere that makes your heart race.
The adventure is always worth it.
